GM Sucks - Cars I love/Cars I hate - Automotive Forums .com- A Message Board for Every Make and Model: "'GM is back??? LEt's see now. They killed the Camaro and Firebird, they have the ancient, lumbering FWD sedans- Cavalier, Seville, Deville, Century, Le Sabre, Regal, Grand Prix, Grand Am etc. they are importing a Daewoo as a Chevy, they have the Australian Monaro as the Pontiac GTO, the Opel CTS (Doesn't quite hold the candle to it's competition), the overpriced XLR, there is the ugly AND overpriced SSR and a range of shonky Utes and SUV's. Looks like they're on thier way down. They've already lost a lot of market share and it isn't hard to see why.'"

What sets the Envoy XUV apart from the competition is a sliding rear roof and tailgate that turn this sport utility vehicle into a faux pickup with an open cargo bay, but enclosed rear windows. The XUV also features a sliding 'midgate' that seals off the rest of the cabin from the rear cargo compartment and the outside elements. "

We think the 2002 Avalanche is more toy than tool -- and an expensive toy at that, considering the $36,168 sticker on our four-wheel-drive test vehicle. We also think the Avalanche -- essentially a short-bed pickup version of the big Suburban utility vehicle -- is still a product in search of a market. We just wonder how much of a market there really is for an overgrown Tonka truck."

'It would be pretty cool,' said Tony Posawatz, assistant vehicle line executive on the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, who attended the unusual business gathering. Leftbanker: 07/01/2002 - 07/31/2002: "A while back I was sitting in a cafe with a woman I know when a new Chevy Avalanche SUV drove past spewing emissions. This SUV has all sorts of rubber sidewalls to protect it from the harsh elements soccer moms are likely to encounter at the mall. My friend commented that it looked like a piece of Tupperware. I doubt this is the macho image that Chevy had in mind.

The print ad for the Avalanche goes like this: The Avalanche can handle everything you'll need on your next journey. I've never taken a 'journey' before but this ad assumes that whoever buys this over-powered piece of Tupperware has already taken at least one journey and plans another as soon as they sign over their life to own this ridiculous vehicle. How I envy these intrepid journey-takers.

chevrolet-avalanche: "Part of GM's problem is that it suffers from $1,100 in legacy costs for each of its vehicles made. Legacy costs are the pension and health care costs generated by a million or so retirees and dependents. The Japanese competitors don't labor under this handicap. Hence, GM can not charge more for its vehicles but has this additional overhead burden. As an offset, it has squeezed its parts suppliers into lowering their prices. They have complied under pressure but consequently produce cheaper and inferior parts which find their way into GM products. The dealers are satisfied with this situation because part of their profits are earned from their service shops which stay busy. That is my editorial for the day!' "

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness: "When tires are being inflated the sidewall of the tire can explode, causing a sidewall zipper failure. Sidewall zipper failures occur because the sidewall design and manufacturing. Deflating a tire can add stress when the tire is reinflated and cause a blowout. Manufacturers deal with this tire failure by issuing warnings instead of changing the tire designs. Bead failures also occur during the inflation of the tire, and the explosion bead failures cause often times result in serious and deadly conditions. Bead fractures usually occur at the splice joint, which combined with the low-pressure explosion causes the trajectory of the rim and the tire to sever limbs, cause brain trauma, and smash facial bones.
Tire failures can occur when there is a high-speed spin-off failure, happening when one of the two rear wheels is stationary and the other wheel can spin without restraint due to a design defect. Ozone cracking is an uncommon tire failure, but small cracks on the rubber's surface due mainly to atmospheric ozone breaks down tire sidewalls. Manufacturing defects are normally to blame in cases of ozone cracking."

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness: "Another type of tire failure that can occur is when a multi-piece wheel is used. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration wanted to ban multi-piece rims, but the tire and wheel industry was able to sponsor an education program at work and avoid the ban. OSHA guidelines require using a safety cage during tire mounting operations, but after the wheel is removed from the safety cage accidents still happen. Posters that were designed for the education program are now in most service stations and tire shops, but now the liability of the tire failures become the business' responsibility, as well as employers and injured employees. Tire manufacturers are able to avoid complete liability now because of the educational program. A single piece wheel has been around for decades that would avoid multi-piece rim explosions, yet the design has not been incorporated."

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness: "Currently, light truck tires and passenger tires do not use the new technology that has been designed to prevent tread separation from occurring. This new type of manufacturing tire has been around for years now, yet it has not been incorporated because of the additional cost of production that it will bring. The tire design prevents tread separation because it surrounds the belt plies that are below the tread with a nylon cap to add a layer between the steel belt and the road to better withstand moisture. This nylon cap also creates additional stability to the interior tire"

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness

Tire Failure -Crashworthiness: "There are different types of tire failures that can occur. One of the most common types of tire failure is due to a tread separation. Tread separation is the result of the plies of a tire separating from one another. When tires are built there are different layers.
An assembled tire is exposed to high temperatures and pressure to cure the assembly, which bonds all the layers. Steel belts are sometimes incorporated into the steel belted radial tire for more impact and puncture resistance. Unfortunately the addition of the steel belt will not stick to the rubber compounds unless the manufacturers coat the steel wires before putting them into the construction of the tire, but the difference in the steel and rubber makes tread separation for all steel belted radial tires possible. Tread separation possibility becomes greater as the speed of the vehicle increases."

GMC Recalls - Recall and Defect Information - Crashworthiness

GMC Recalls - Recall and Defect Information - Crashworthiness: "GMC has recalled 546,000 2000 and 2001 Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Jimmy, and Oldsmobile Bravada SUVs because of brake and hazard light failures"

GMC Recalls - Recall and Defect Information - Crashworthiness

GMC Recalls - Recall and Defect Information - Crashworthiness: "NHTSA reported that GMC has recalled about 1,530 affected 1999 Chevrolet T series trucks. The recalled Chevrolets were manufactured between September 1998 and August 2000 because of a condition of premature wear in the clutch master-cylinder pushrod end that attaches to the clutch pedal pin. If the GMC clutch pedal does not return completely to the full-up position this may indicate future problems because the fast-idle engine speed control may not function correctly. Significant clutch master-cylinder pushrod end wear can lead to the attaching end to bend open or even break completely off and the pedal pin will detach from the clutch rod link and engage the clutch. If this occurs, when brakes are not applied the GMC truck could move forward if the transmission is in a forward gear or move backwards if the transmission is in reverse gear. The GMC Chevrolet owners will be notified beginning April."

Chevrolet Blazer Reviews: "The overall quality found in these vehicles is questionable. The Blazer is early in its life. The key to buying a Blazer, Jimmy, or Bravada is to obtain a huge discount. Since this will be the last year for the S10 Blazer, there won't be any new ones left by the end of the year. The resale values plummet for these SUVs because of their problemmatic parts quality. The engineering and workmanship leaves much to be desired as well. Still, if the discount compared to a similar 4Runner or Pathfinder is large enough (at least a 30% differential), GMs products should be considered. Please remember that GM does not stand behind its products beyond meeting basic warranty needs. It also can be rather surly when dealing with individual customers (conclusions reached from discussing my Jimmy's ongoing oil leak with GM employees). Part of GM's problem is that it suffers from $1,100 in legacy costs for each of its vehicles made. Consumer complaints about Chevrolet Suburban - Miscellaneous Problems: "Jill of Modesto, CA, writes:
We have had endless problems with our 1999 Suburban. We purchased this vehicle as new. We have taken our Suburban to the service dept. eight times since January 1999. Some of the services were for the same recurring problems and others were for new major problems, such as a recent leaking transfer case. This vehicle only has approx. 20,000 miles.
The last four times we have taken our vehicle in for service has been primarily for a popping sound in the front end which is heard when driving up a sidewalk curb or merely when turning the wheel to back out of a parking space. This popping sound is very loud and an obvious indication of something not right in the front end. The last time we took it in, we told the service consultant we did not want the vehicle back until this was corrected. " After two days I received a call from Robert in service, he told me again that their service techs can hear the popping but this time they are unable to locate the problem. I again told him fix it before you call for me to pick it up.

After three days Robert called again telling me they pinpointed the problem at the passenger front door hinge. We were very skeptical of this finding, especially when the noise comes from the left lower floorboard area. However we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Unfortunately, the popping was heard once again as we pulled into our driveway directly after picking up our vehicle from the service dept. Being without a vehicle so many times, with a houseful of children (I run a daycare) has became an issue with my business. I need a large vehicle to transport children to and from school.

We purchased a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer from Bob Baker Chevrolet in El Cajon, California, in early 2000. The vehicle had 40,000 miles on it, was in good shape, and according to the dealer, had just had a complete service. At about 70,000 miles, the car started to shift hard between first and second after it had been driven for a while. When it cooled down (that's subjective - the temperature gauge never moved) the problem went away. I checked the fluid levels - all were good - then opened the radiator. I was suprised to discover that the radiator was filled with brown sludge, especially as the car used Dexcool - a 100,000 mile/no service needed coolant."

I purchased a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe from Classic Chevrolet with 45k miles. I also purchased a 2-year, 20k extended warranty. About 3-4k miles out of warranty, my truck began to overheat. I took it to a mechanic who checked the cooling system and replaced the water pump, flushed the system, and pressure tested it for leaks, refilling it with the Dexcool orange coolant GM demands you use. At 74k miles, I am now told I have to replace the intake gasket, for $650. This is a widespread problem and I believe my engine may have damage due to the coolant leaking into the engine.
Thousands of these incidents have happened and GM denies any problem exists."

No, the 5.7 diesel was based on a gas engine. The 6.2 was 100% diesel. One of the worst engines ever put in a truck IMHO.... No power, mucho smoke in stock form. It was made to equal the 350 gas engine. Don't expect much from a stock 6.2 diesel, even those with a Banks turbo didn't put out much. "

I say never go to a dealership to get your car fixed, unless it's under warrantee.

Dealerships here charge around $80/hour for labor. Most private shops charge closer to $50/hour. On a 10 hour job, that can be a huge difference.

And, unless the GM parts are stainless steel, it's definitely a rip off."

Chev milks clients!

Not sure if this is the right forum or not,

My mother just took her malibu into the local dealer to get her oil changed and they tell her her muffler is connected to a pipe underneath and they say the whole thing needs to be replaced, they quted her something like $500+ (CDN) dollars to use "GM" parts and $260CDN for aftermarket parts. I have a haunting suspicion she is getting ripped off but I have no knowledge of cars at the moment, can anyone recommend perhaps shed some light on this situation?

Reply
Ya, forget taking it to GM if the warranty won't cover it. Tell her to take it to a muffler shop like Midas, for they have pretty consistent fees and you don't have to worry about getting ripped off if you have no clue on the matter.
